LIVE – Label Night feat Cyril Cyril & Hyperculte
Lebanon
This month we launch Label Nights, a live music event where we partner with independent record labels to showcase contemporary music from around the world. This first edition welcomes the spearheading Bongo Joe Records who present two bands from their sweeping repertoire.
Cyril Cyril repeat themselves through infinite mirror continuums of folk and trance. A glimpse of wandering rumours borrowed from uncertain ages whispers beyond Mont Atlas and Ararat, explaining to whomever is willing to hear the boomerang echo of thousands of other someplaces where melodies hummed by angels play continuously since the birth of mankind. With a banjo, guitar, melodeon, strange drums, multiples voices and languages as their sole companions, Cyril Cyril laser cut a groove from the soul and transcend time for a few tracks. The tandem, disguised as an imaginary fanfare, barges onto the dance floor using poetry filled with groove and psychedelia.
Behind the post-punk krautrock Hyperculte duo lie Simone Aubert (Massicot) and Vincent Bertholet (Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp). The former whacks her drums with pinpoint precision while the latter tames his double bass in a continuously throbbing loop. Together, they hum repetitive and inspired litanies. The result is a hypnotic ball of fire, contemplative and extraordinarily powerful. Hyperculte brush with the side of their fists the urgency and audacity of Liquid Liquid, the experimentations of Arthur Russell, the unabashed impetuosity of Can, and something ethereal and incantatory from the depths of the breeding grounds of existence.
Doors 9pm | Tickets $25
The bands are on a regional tour through Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt, supported by Pro Helvetia Cairo and the Embassy of Switzerland in Lebanon / Ambassade de Suisse au Liban
