Swiss artist and musician Jacques Siron is coming back to Egypt, at the Downtown Contemporary Art Festival D-CAF with his performance “Cairo Cantata”, and his film “One thousand and one Cairo” in cooperation with El Warsha troupe.
On the 3rd of April, Siron and El Warsha will be taking the performance 300 kilometers south to Mallawy city, Menia, However, they will be back to Cairo on the 8th to participate in the come D-CAF Festival.
The ‘Cairo Cantata’ is a live portrait of the city of Cairo with engaging sounds, actions, movements and situations. The actors, singers, and musicians of El Warsha interact with Jacques Siron, a stranger who tries to regulate the mess, succeeding at times and failing at others but keeps trying. El Warsha is a craft of storytelling blended with polyphony, which is an art of superimposing voices, noises, songs, words, rhythms, humor, and talents. The moods alternate from minimalism to extreme saturation, from silence to chaos, from bits and pieces to fully developed scenes. This unpredictable mishmash captures Cairo’s chaotic character and gives audiences a taste of it.
This is the culmination (third stage) of a multi-faceted project that started a year ago, with a research trip by Jacques Siron, followed by a workshop in October/November, which led to two demos. Those demos developed into a fully-fledged performance which will be held on the 8th of April, 2017 at the D-CAF Festival, which celebrates the 30th Anniversary of El Warsha, Egypt’s first independent theatre company.
“One Thousand and one Cairo” is being screened with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt.
Tickets information will be announced soon.
