Sebastian Hirn studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin German Literature and History, stage directing at Max Reinhardt Seminar Vienna and stage design at the Zurich University of the Arts. He worked with the directors and stage designers Luc Bondy, Achim Freyer, Michael Simon and for the artist and sculptor Stephan Huber. He has realized a large number of projects as freelance director for theatre and opera – ranging from unusual productions of classical operas or plays to performances or videos – in Germany and abroad (at Wiener Festwochen, Burgtheater Wien, Schauspielhaus Bochum, Internationale Gluck-Opern-Festspiele as well as SpielArt and Rodeo Festival München, Maximiliansforum München, Lothringer13 München…)
Hirn organized dance- and music- series, made space installations in art spaces and realized different site specific projects as well as happenings art performances. For the Mozart Festival Schwetzingen he made a new translation of Cosi fan tutte. In the last years he is working mainly on documentary research projects. His method of working transcends established disciplines and moves within the space between fine art, theatre/dance and music. It is characterized by a great joy for experiments and openness that often results in collaborations with visual artists, musicians/composers or scholars.
