Visual Arts
An Egyptian artist and writer, born in 1989 in Ismailia, and currently living in Cairo. Shawky graduated from Faculty of Art Education, Helwan University in 2011; and now working as a co-director of MHWLN, a working group devoted to researching and reflecting on the history of contemporary art in Egypt.
Hassan just came back from Switzerland, where he met and interviewed Swiss artists and trainers who conducted video art workshops in the 90s, in Egypt, as part of a Pro Helvetia long-term project back then.
Since 2014 Hassan decided to start digging in the history of video art in Egypt, and the influence of international organizations such as Pro Helvetia on it, discussing the nature of the educational curriculums and methodologies of film and video production processes.
This research trip is part of Shawky’s project “Chapter from the history of video art in the 90s” in collaboration with Pro Helvetia Cairo, and the project based on Shawky’s research which will come to the light by the end of this year with an exhibition, a publication and a seminar.
