The Fischermanns Orchestra met the Artistic Director of the Cairo Jazz Festival in Bremen during the showcase festival Jazzahead!2015. Amro Salah invited us to come and play in Cairo and we immediately started dreaming about going to Egypt.
As moving 15 musicians to another continent is always a big logistic challenge, we had to figure out how we can make our dream come true and we finally managed to put a tour together for fall 2019.
Our experience in Cairo was fantastic! The energy of this roaring city combined with the warmth of the Egyptian people and the nice mild climate made our trip a highlight in our musical careers. The Cairo Jazz Festival attracts a large number of people from all ages; we especially enjoyed playing for a young audience. But also, our other concerts and activities in this country were very memorable. Two experiences that will stay in our minds and souls are the workshop at the B’sarya Arts in Alexandria, and thereafter the concert at the Jesuit Centre for Culture, where 400 enthusiastic young people attended our show. And second the jam session with the Masters of Egyptian music at MAKAN – Egyptian Center for Culture and Art, where we had the unique chance to delve into Arab culture and get as close to Middle Eastern music tradition as it gets.
These are unforgettable memories we will always be glad to think about!
